Living Kanji

Changes has been completed.

Living Kanji is a pioneering effort by a Swiss graphic designer, Chiara Mendolia, Japanese art and creative director, Hami Miharu Matsunaga, and American copywriter, Adam Gothelf based in Tokyo. Our goal is to create new logographic kanji that challenge 1,600 years of gender bias and LGBTQ+ exclusion in the Japanese written language. The title ‘Living Kanji’ reflects our vision of breathing new life into ancient kanji, transforming them to align with contemporary values of inclusivity and diversity. In addition to challenging gender-biased kanji (which served as the initial inspiration), we’re also attempting to create the first-ever kanji-inclusive terminology for the LGBTQ+ community, who have primarily had to rely on katakana as a means of self-identification.
